Surrounded

Good Morning:

Nobody likes the idea of being surrounded by enemies. In warfare, this almost assuredly meant defeat for the surrounded army. In high school, this probably meant sneers, insulting comments, or simply a sense of nervousness. In ordinary life, it might mean co-workers who exclude you, one time friends who now gossip over what you told them in confidence, or losing your business dealings because of agreements made without your knowledge or input. Whatever the particular case may be, being surrounded by enemies is never a welcome place to be.

King David knew this as well. He had been surrounded by enemies in battle. He had been surrounded by unfaithful friends who betrayed him to his usurping son. Yet he also knew that along with being surrounded by enemies, He was surrounded by the strength of God. He wrote in Psalm 138:7 “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch out Your hand Against the wrath of my enemies, And Your right hand will save me.” David’s walk through this life was full of trouble. Yet he knew that with the strength of the LORD God surrounding Him, he did not need to fear His troubles. The LORD would save Him.

You assuredly have troubles in your life as well. Whether those troubles come from enemies or from your own mistakes and sinful ways does not change whether the LORD is with you. He will be with you when people plot physical or emotional pain for your life. He will be with you when your own troubles finally catch up with you. He will be there when your enemy, the Devil, attempts to take your life. Being surrounded by enemies and troubles can make you feel overwhelmed until you remember that the LORD surrounds them. He will overcome your enemies. His power will work in you to overcome your troubles. His mighty strength, displayed by not intervening in His own death on the cross, has already defeated the Devil’s claim on you. At times, you will be surrounded by troubles in your life, but rejoice, for those troubles cannot hold a candle to the mighty strength of Jesus, who resides in you and has your troubles surrounded. Amen.

1. I walk in danger all the way.
    The thought shall never leave me
That Satan, who has marked his prey,
    Is plotting to deceive me.
This foe with hidden snares
    May seize me unawares
If e’er I fail to watch and pray.
    I walk in danger all the way.

5. I walk with Jesus all the way,
    His guidance never fails me;
Within His wounds I find a stay
    When Satan’s power assails me;
And by His footsteps led,
    My path I safely tread.
In spite of ills that threaten may,
    I walk with Jesus all the way.
