What Goes Up Must Come Down

Good Morning:

Acts 1:10-11 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

What a whirlwind of a month and a half for the disciples. Christ had arrived in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, was crucified five days later, and rose from the dead three days after that. For the next forty days He had been appearing to the disciples and instructing them of all that they would need to know after He ascended outside of Bethany. When that happened, the disciples could only stand there gazing after Him.

Have you had weeks or months like the one the disciples had? Where there is so much going on that you can barely catch your breath, and then in an instant it seems as if there’s nothing to do. However, as the angels reminded the disciples on the first Ascension Day, Jesus is coming back soon and so there is always something to do. The disciples began preparing for Christ’s return with prayer and supplication (Acts 1:14). We can do the same.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:16 God gives us a description of what Christ’s return will look like. “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.” There will be no missing or mistaking it. The Last Day and its effects will be even more obvious than gravity. Gravity and our Lord have one more thing in common, what goes up must come down, and Christ is coming down soon.
