A Mother’s Blessing

A Mother’s Blessing

Good Morning:

Much is written in the Bible regarding the blessings which fathers bestowed on their children. Abraham gave his blessing to Isaac instead of Ishmael. Isaac was tricked into giving the main blessing to Jacob. Jacob split his blessing between all twelve of his sons. Yet though not talked about as much in the Bible, a mother’s blessings on her children may be the greatest gift any human can give to another.

When Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob lived, a mother typically did not have legal right to her husband’s possessions. These possessions belonged to himself and his sons, should the father die. Yet though the mother could not typically give a physical inheritance to her children, the blessings a god-fearing mother can give to her children far outweigh any temporal possessions a child could inherit. Proverbs 31:10, and 28a say “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies… 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; ” A virtuous or god-fearing mother is perhaps the single greatest boon any child can have here on this earth. A god-fearing mother instills compassion, honesty, love, and faithfulness in her children. These characteristics stick with some children more than others, but a god-fearing mother gives children the foundation to build these attributes on.

A god-fearing mother gives her children this foundation because she knows where to find it. Paul wrote to Timothy ” that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2Timothy 3:15). Timothy’s mother and grandmother raised him up to fear the Lord and know His word because god-fearing mothers lead their children to the same place they find their stability, Jesus Christ.

Today, mothers own property, earn income, have assets and possess a host of other earthly advantages which they can pass on to their children. Yet the greatest eternal asset they can give to their children remains the foundational truths of God’s word. Children who have this background will always remember the redeeming love of their Savior. Through life’s storms and tempests this knowledge may be relied upon or not, but the saving truth of God’s message for them is with them, always calling out to them and always willing to save. What a phenomenal gift a Mother’s blessing is!
